The Emergency Story

Faced with a critical project delay, our customer needed a rapid solution for out-of-spec tools that would otherwise require sending them back to their northeast shop for rework. This would have significantly increased lead times for a vital project. Seeking an expedient resolution, they approached Mammoth with a challenging request: to remake the tooling pieces with a corrected inside diameter and swiftly restore their project’s momentum.

Their urgency was underscored by their timing; they reached out to us on a Friday afternoon during a holiday weekend. Collaboratively, we worked alongside their engineering team, swiftly obtaining the revised specifications. Our Mammoth engineers promptly contacted our tooling representative, identifying the exact boring bar and insert necessary to machine Rockwell 60 D2 material.

Embarking on this intricate task, Mammoth’s team commenced programming and meticulously calculating the feeds and speeds required for hard turning this tough material. This task was crucial, as our customer was in the process of validating a novel design for a high-profile client. Their dedication was evident as they had allocated an entire production line for this trial, with their major client closely observing the process. Time was of the essence; every moment lost in the trial was a loss in valuable production time.

The core issue addressed by Mammoth was the interference caused by the tooling’s excessively tight inner diameter, sourced from a third party. This defect was hindering their manufacturing run and damaging the work pieces.

To ensure a flawless fit, our machinists engineered a custom gauge tailored for a precise go-no-go test, accommodating the tool’s unique profile. Our engineers and machinists willingly worked through Saturday, eagerly awaiting the overnight delivery of the tools.

Upon their arrival, our expert machinist meticulously adjusted the boring bar and diamond insert, fine-tuning the offsets to achieve perfection, all under the watchful eye of the customer. This allowed for immediate feedback and adjustments, ensuring a successful outcome.

Mammoth’s commitment to our customer’s success was demonstrated by our willingness to go above and beyond, working tirelessly over a holiday weekend to deliver not just a solution, but the foundation for a successful product trial for their significant client.
